Hi!

September 29th, 2008

A smile and a greeting go a long way! I think our campus would become a friendlier place if everyone passing on the sidewalk were to greet those they meet with a smile and a ”Hi!”  Faculty and staff could get the ball rolling, and I’ll bet the idea would catch on.  Maybe some posters could be added around campus too.

The more delivery systems we have to offer students, the more educational opportunities they have for access to classes when they need them, whether it be face-to-face, Web, or ITV, or even utilizing hybrid methods of instruction.

Barton provides educational opportunities to students according to what they need when they need it. We are accessible to all students. Our classes are not neccessarily governed by clock or calendar. There are no educational boundaries for students, no defined territories or media while they learn. We value relationships with our students and co-workers and strive to empower and support each other in our individual roles. Our roles are easily distinguished by our students in our actions and attitudes to helping them achieve their success.

Developing a retention strategy for students at Barton Community College. For the staff, developing a task force to interact with students during the class drop process to establish a reason for dropping or withdrawing from the class. This task force would contact the person to provide suggestions or solutions to the problem and have the ability to contact the advisor and instructor of the class.  For the faculty, establishing a commitment to assist students who are a retention risk and providing a means of communicating with other staff to assist those students who may need help.

At every meeting where decisions are made, the question must be asked “How does this decision positively affect our students?”  The answers to that question must be reflected in the minutes of that meeting.

Ensure that every Barton student participates in community service projects during their tenure at Barton.  We feel that by doing this the students will achieve a sense of worth and and become a more solid part of the Barton community.  Thus, their retention will improve.
